Criticism

The company responsible for Dungeons & Dragons, Wizards of the Coast, faced criticism from its fanbase. This happened when it came to light that it incorporated AI-generated artwork into its most recent companion book.

As AI technology continues to make its mark across diverse sectors, its role in artistic creation has also gained prominence. In the instance of the supplementary D&D book “Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants,” observant fans on Twitter pointed out that certain pieces of artwork displayed unmistakable indications of being produced with AI.

I gotta say that using AI art is a new low I hadn't expected WOTC to reach. Fantastic timing, given GenCon is currently going.

The Team’s Response to Criticism

Responding to the criticism, Wizards of the Coast took steps to address the matter via their D&D Beyond Twitter account. They expressed that they were unaware of the AI-sourced image. The brand noted that they have since revised their protocols to avoid similar incidents moving forward.

The artist behind the AI-generated artwork, Ilya Shkipin, acknowledged through a deleted tweet. Only certain parts or editing processes of the tweet employed AI. AI was not the image’s sole method of creation.

Fans Reaction

The D&D community’s reaction to this revelation was far from positive. Some individuals even threatened to boycott the book and encouraged others to explore alternative tabletop roleplaying games.

Necessary Steps from the Team

Reacting to the unfolding scenario, Wizards of the Coast underscored their stance against the integration of AI in the crafting of forthcoming artwork for their offerings. They are currently reevaluating their approach and amending artist guidelines to unequivocally specify that AI-generated art should not play a role in the creative procedure.

The business is working closely with the artist to update the book’s artwork as part of this process. Fans, however, have expressed their skepticism and requested a goodwill gesture, proposing that the book be made freely accessible to remedy the issue.

Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants

The inclusion of the revised artwork in the initial printing of “Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants,” scheduled for release on August 15, remains uncertain. However, it’s possible that the book’s digital versions will have the new art. A beginner’s guide is available to provide the crucial knowledge and guidance required to start playing Dungeons . Additionally to Dragons for those who are fascinated by the idea of diving into the game.
