Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), one of the world’s leading manufacturers of advanced processors, has unveiled plans to invest a staggering $2.9 billion in a state-of-the-art chip packaging factory in Taiwan. The move comes in response to the skyrocketing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technology, prompting TSMC to expand its capacity to meet the market’s needs.
The investment, equivalent to approximately 90 billion Taiwan dollars, is will propel the company’s presence in the AI market significantly. TSMC has been responsible for producing advanced chips used in a wide range of electronic devices, from iPads and Macs to iPhones.
According to a report from the Official News Agency in Taiwan, the growth of the AI industry has led to a surge in the demand for TSMC’s advanced chip packaging. Also, the company has faced challenges keeping up with the demands of some clients, prompting the decision to double its current chip packaging capacity.
TSMC has secured permission to lease land in Northern Taiwan, with the factory to be located around Tongluo Park. Also, many expect the project to create approximately 1500 job opportunities in the region, contributing to economic growth and development.
TSMC is experiencing ‘tight capacity’
At present, the semiconductor giant faces “tight capacity” issues in its advanced packaging segment. Chip packaging is a crucial stage in the semiconductor production process, involving the careful placement of chips in protective containers and establishing necessary connections before being integrated into electronic appliances.
TSMC’s CEO, C.C Wei, addressed the capacity challenges, affirming that the company is working diligently to boost its production capabilities rapidly. He also expressed confidence that the difficulties would be over in due course. In the interim, TSMC is collaborating with its clients to support their growth objectives amidst the capacity constraints.
The situation has led to intense competition among TSMC’s major clients, AMD and Nvidia, due to the limited supply in chip packaging capacity. Nvidia, which utilizes large bandwidth memory chips purchased for their A100 processing units, is one of the companies vying for the increased capacity to sustain the growth of innovative products like ChatGPT.
The investment in the advanced chip packaging factory marks a crucial step for TSMC as it aims to maintain its position at the forefront of the global semiconductor industry.
