Tech giants Microsoft Corporation, Anthropic, OpenAI and Google LLC have set up a new industry group to promote the safe and responsible AI usage. The new group called Frontier Model Forum will work with researchers and policymakers to formulate ways to control the fast-rising technology.
The announcement comes after the four tech companies alongside Meta and Amazon joined the White House initiative to subject their artificial intelligence systems to external testing before public release.
According to the foundational companies, the forum would be focused on promoting research into risks in AI, developing the world’s best standards and techniques for artificial intelligence safety and facilitating the dissemination of information in the industry.
The forum which has only four members presently says it is open to new members. Organisations qualified for membership must be deploying and developing frontier AI models while showing commitment to the safety of the models. Brad Smith, the President of Microsoft said, “Companies creating AI technology have a responsibility to ensure it is safe, secure and remains under human control.”
The companies involved intend to establish an advisory body to focus on the group’s key priorities. Founding members will be central in decision-making and will consult with government bodies on guiding AI development. Furthermore, the technical benchmarks and evaluations produced by the Frontier Model Forum will be accessible through a publicly available library, fostering transparency and cooperation within the industry.
Tech giants committed to responsible AI usage
In their joint statement, the companies expressed their intention to follow the example of other initiatives that aim to harness the positive potential of artificial intelligence, such as MLCommons and Partnership for AI.
Meanwhile, the European Union has been actively promoting what could become the first concrete artificial intelligence law known as the “AI Act.” This proposed legislation aims to regulate the industry while ensuring consumer safety and considering global implications. The law seeks to strike a balance between fostering innovation and safeguarding the well-being of individuals and society as a whole.
