OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, recently pledged $5 million to the American Journalism Project (AJP). This marked OpenAI’s latest collaboration with a media organization.
The primary objective of this commitment is to advance the use of AI in aiding and enhancing local journalism. Along with the monetary contribution of $5 million, OpenAI has also promised $5 million in API credits to the AJP. This grants the organization extensive developer-level access to OpenAI’s expanding array of AI products. This investment aims to bolster the development and utilization of AI technology in journalism and support local news organizations’ efforts.
The American Journalism Project
According to a statement by Sarabeth Berman, CEO of AJP, safeguarding local journalism as a crucial pillar of our democracy requires a prudent approach to the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technology.
Established in 2019, the American Journalism Project assists nonprofit news organizations. With the recent funding, the AJP aims to create a technology and AI studio and assemble a specialized team to assess AI applications. Additionally, the organization plans to offer grants to support other media entities in exploring AI’s potential and its impact on journalism.
OpenAI Partnerships
to the AP’s vast archive of news stories dating back to 1985. In return, the Associated Press gains access to OpenAI’s suite of products and technology.
Furthermore, OpenAI has recently entered into a six-year agreement with Shutterstock, a stock media platform. This agreement allows OpenAI to access Shutterstock’s stock photos, videos, and music collection. It’s worth noting that all three organizations involved in these partnerships are perceived as representing constituencies directly impacted by the rise of generative AI, which has raised concerns in their respective industries.
The American Journalism Project (AJP) showed enthusiasm for leveraging AI in news coverage. The organization also recognized the flaws associated with the technology, particularly its potential to be exploited for spreading misinformation.
