South Korean technology giant Naver has made a striking entry into the field of generative artificial intelligence services with the introduction of its latest offering, HyperCLOVA X. This move positions Naver as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, as tech titans worldwide vie to dominate the growing field of large language models (LLMs).
In the unveiling on Thursday, Naver boasted HyperCLOVA X can enhance shopping and marketing experiences for both users and advertisers. The AI tool can generate generative AI-powered searches for users and customised services for enterprise
HyperCLOVA X, a revamped and improved iteration of Naver’s previous HyperCLOVA language model, can create AI-driven searches that enhance shopping experiences for users, while simultaneously tailoring customized services for enterprise clients.
In a notable step forward, Naver’s CEO, Kim Yuwon, shared that HyperCLOVA X marks a milestone in the company’s AI journey. The earlier HyperCLOVA model, developed in the Korean language, comprised around 204 billion parameters. While the specific parameter count for HyperCLOVA X remains undisclosed, it is clear that Naver is making substantial strides in enhancing the AI’s capabilities.
Applications of HyperCLOVA X— Clova X and Cue
Key applications of HyperCLOVA X include the revolutionary chat application, Clova X, aimed at revolutionizing search experiences. The AI engine also powers Cue, a cutting-edge generative AI function. With Clova X, Naver aims to boost productivity through features like language translation and document summarization. Kim Yuwon noted, “This will save 10% to 50% of time spent on those tasks in terms of productivity.”

Partnering with Samsung to develop AI chip
In a strategic partnership that underscores its commitment to excellence, Naver has joined forces with industry heavyweight Samsung to develop efficient and cost-effective AI semiconductor chips. As Naver’s AI endeavors transition toward commercialization, these chips will play a pivotal role in elevating service quality and ensuring seamless AI technology development.
Naver’s ambitions aren’t limited to its home turf. With an eye on regions marked by political sensitivities, the company aims to craft tailor-made AI applications for the Middle East. Additionally, Naver seeks to bridge language barriers in non-English-speaking locales like Southeast Asia and Japan.
