Google Unveils AI Proofreader for Gboard Beta Users

September 14, 2023
in AI News

Google is set to change the way we communicate through its latest development – an AI-powered proofreader for Gboard, its popular keyboard app. This innovative feature, currently in beta testing will enhance users’ grammar and spelling, ensuring that written communication is flawless and effortless.

The technology giant disclosed its ambitious plans to introduce generative AI-powered features during the 2023 I/I developer conference, setting the stage for a major leap in text composition and correction.

Spotlight on the Proofreading Feature

The forthcoming AI proofreader for Gboard is exclusively available to beta testers using the pre-release version of the app. This tool leverages the power of generative artificial intelligence to meticulously examine text for errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling, subsequently making necessary corrections.

Functionality-wise, accessing the proofreading feature is remarkably straightforward. Users merely need to tap on the proofread option found within the keyboard’s toolbar. This action prompts the system to swiftly process the highlighted text and present users with suggested corrections for any detected grammar or spelling inaccuracies.

Here’s where user agency comes into play. When presented with the suggestions, users have two choices. They can either embrace the revised version by tapping the thumbs-up icon, thus substituting the original text with the corrected one, or dismiss the suggestion by selecting the thumbs-down icon, upholding their original input.

Beyond the proofreading function, Gboard also introduces a ‘Fix it’ icon for users who prefer to have their text corrected silently, with the revised version not displayed.

This innovative feature promises to empower beta users to rectify grammatical issues without the need for external applications like ChatGPT or Bard, as well as popular grammar-checking tools like Grammarly. It appears poised to become a seamless and indispensable alternative to the conventional autocorrect feature.

An Array of AI-based Features Await

Google’s ambitions extend far beyond just proofreading. Reports indicate that the company is diligently developing a suite of new AI-powered capabilities destined for Gboard.

One of the forthcoming additions is the ability for users to generate AI-driven stickers, aptly named ‘Emogen.’ This feature promises to infuse a touch of creativity and personalization into digital communication.

Furthermore, a “tone” feature is in the works, allowing users to effortlessly rephrase messages with distinct tones, whether formal or informal, ensuring messages hit the right note for any context. Additionally, Gboard is set to introduce a “help me write” option tailored for Google Docs and Gmail, aiming to streamline the writing process and enhance user productivity.
