Apple is reportedly investing millions of dollars daily in the research and development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) conversational features for its virtual assistant, Siri. According to The Information, Apple has a unit called the Foundation Models working on the AI features. Furthermore, the company has formed two specialized teams dedicated to the development of language and image models, each playing a pivotal role in the evolution of Siri. Just like Google, Apple is looking to improve its assistant with generative AI.
One of the primary objectives of Apple’s intelligence unit is to explore the creation of videos, 3D scenes, and images using generative AI, a concept reminiscent of OpenAI’s groundbreaking projects like Dall-E and Midjourney. By harnessing these advanced features, Apple also aims to empower iPhone users to accomplish a wide array of tasks through simple voice commands.
Sources close to the development suggest that the virtual assistant will undergo a profound integration transformation, expected to materialize with the anticipated iOS 18 update, slated for release in 2024. This integration will enable Siri to seamlessly employ generative AI to simplify complex tasks for users.
Apple will develop language model Ajax
In a notable endeavor, Apple is also heavily investing in the creation of an in-house generative AI model known as “Ajax.” Furthermore, Apple envisions this cutting-edge model to possess the ability to recognize and generate images, videos, and text. Users can anticipate the ability to convert images into GIFs and generate immersive 3D scenes, expanding the possibilities of content creation.
However, a previous report by Bloomberg divulged that Apple could name its forthcoming Language Model (LLM) “Ajax GPT.” Also, the company expects it to outperform OpenAI’s ChatGPT 3.5 and boast an impressive capacity for handling over 175 billion parameters. Such capabilities are projected to lay the foundation for the development of a robust chatbot, enhancing the customer experience for AppleCare users.
The driving force behind Apple’s relentless push towards AI integration is John Giannandrea, who joined the company in 2018 with the specific mission of bolstering Siri’s performance.
